Starting January 16th you can pick up a FREE hard copy of the new Winter Trail Map around Fernie at local shops and the Visitor Centre. This year’s map and enhanced grooming and trail effort was the result of a big collaborative initiative by many key organizations, trail groups and landowners. The new map is also viewable online at www.FernieWinterTrailMap.com.
The 2020-2021 Winter Trails Collaborative is an initiative facilitated by Tourism Fernie with the Fernie Trails Alliance, Fernie Nordic Society, City of Fernie, private landowners for Montane and Ridgemont, Island Lake Lodge, Fernie Alpine Resort, Fernie Fat Bike, FMBC, Fernie Pet Society, Fernie Search & Rescue, Stag Leap Running, Fernie Snowmobile Assn and the Fernie Chamber & Visitor Centre. With funding from the Resort Municipality Initiative and Columbia Basin Trust trail users will be able to access more groomed trails, parking and washrooms in key areas while using a new Winter Trail Map and updated trail info on TrailForks for navigation and planning! This initiative is unique to 2020-2021 season due to the impacts of COVID-19 and the need to support an increase in trail users enjoying Fernie’s fantastic trails safely!
“We knew this winter season would be unique given the pandemic and the push to get outdoors,” said Jikke Gyorki, Executive Officer of Tourism Fernie. “Though travel restrictions are in place still, there is definitely an increase in local trail users, so we are happy to have worked with this great group of people and organizations to open up more trails, launch a new map and work on a variety of needs such as signage, more parking at the Provincial Park and more access to toilet facilities.”
“Last summer with COVID-19, it was very evident that access to outdoor spaces and trails was of increased importance,” explained Krista Turcasso, President of the Fernie Trails Alliance. “The Alliance recognized the same need would exist in winter, and wanted to ensure trail users had adequate space and the appropriate amenities when exploring Fernie’s extensive trail network. This collaborative is fantastic for our community and it’s great to already see the positive impact it is having!”
